AMERICAN DREAM FUND

HELPING THE NEWEST NEW YORKERS THRIVE

So much of New York City’s greatness can be traced back to the hard work and ingenuity of immigrants. Robin Hood has always embraced this tradition, and we are committed to helping immigrant New Yorkers who are living in poverty gain a foothold in their new home.

THE CHALLENGE

More New Yorkers were born in another country than at any point in the last century. Unfortunately, too many immigrants in our city are unable to reach their potential because they’re grappling with poverty. Nearly half of all poor New Yorkers are immigrants or the children of immigrants, and they have an especially hard time accessing the tools that lead to long-term prosperity.

OUR RESPONSE

In 2014, Robin Hood launched the American Dream Fund to seed programs that serve low-income immigrant families. Since then, we allocated $35 million through 115 grants and profoundly changed the landscape of social services for immigrant New Yorkers. The grants we made helped tens of thousands of immigrant New Yorkers remain in their homes, attend college, get health insurance, and start building a career.

What's Next

While the American Dream Fund has been fully allocated, Robin Hood is more committed than ever to supporting a broad portfolio of high-quality programs focused on the needs of our immigrant neighbors. The lessons we learned through the Fund about the unique needs of our multilingual populations will inform and improve our work.
